Mayor Quinton Lucas did not like one particular word that Missouri Governor Mike Parson used to describe the suspects arrested in the Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl parade shooting.
Three suspects were arrested in the shooting, two of which have since been charged with crimes. The two attackers are juveniles, hence details about them have not been made public since juvenile cases are largely kept private under Missouri law.
Missouri Governor Speaks on Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl Parade Shooting
In wake of the tragic event, Governor Parson recently shared a strong message condemning the attack. He appeared to hint that they will take drastic actions in order to prevent such mass shooting from happening again.
Governor Parson also had some strong words for the arrested suspects, calling them “thugs.”
“We can’t let some thugs just take over and ruin what happened,” Parson said, via The Spun.
Quinton Lucas Didn’t Like Governor’s Comment on Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl Parade Suspects
Mayor Quinton Lucas, however, took issue with the use of “thugs” in Governor Mike Parson’s remarks. He pointed out that it’s a classic “dog whistle” that only fuels online talks that the mug shots of the suspects aren’t being released because they are Black.
Lucas went on to point out that the suspects are juveniles, so their information are being protected.
“I have respect for the governor. We get along well. I disagree strongly with how he would describe that situation. I certainly do think this was criminal activity. It was lawlessness, and I think that that’s troubling. But ‘thugs’ is a dog whistle in the most classic sense,” Lucas said on KCUR last Friday.
“I’ve seen this dog whistle time and again. There’s this kind of giant conservative theory on social media now that the reason these mug shots haven’t been shown is because the purported defendants are Black, and if it were a White defendant we would have just shown them. That is absolutely preposterous. There are protections to juveniles.”
Sure enough, it’s easy to see where Mayor Lucas is coming from. Considering the sensitivity of the issue and the fact that the public eye is on it, Governor Parson certainly need to be careful in order to not spread any misinformation.
The investigation on the Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl parade shooting is still ongoing. Hopefully, it gets resolved soon and what really happened is revealed to the public.
