The Kansas City Chiefs are back-to-back Super Bowl Champions after their victory in Super Bowl LVIII over the San Francisco 49ers. They were the first team to win two consecutive titles since Tom Brady‘s New England Patriots in 2003-04 and are looking to become the first team ever to win three Super Bowls in a row (the Green Bay Packers won three straight NFL Championships on two separate occasions).
Winning, of course, is hard to do in the NFL, and even though they just won it all, the Chiefs have plenty of work to do in order to be able to compete for a title again. They took a big step by signing defensive tackle Chris Jones to a massive contract on Saturday, but there is still work to do, particularly on offense.
The Kansas City Chiefs Will Need to Add a Wide Receiver (or Two)
Fortunately for the Chiefs, they have their top three pass catchers from last season (in terms of receiving yards) all under contract for 2024. They were led in receiving by tight end Travis Kelce, who had 984 yards and five touchdowns. Rookie wide receiver Rashee Rice, who was drafted in the second round of the 2023 NFL Draft, had 938 receiving yards and seven touchdowns. Finally, Justin Watson had 460 yards and three touchdowns.
Those three pass catchers were the only players to exceed 400 receiving yards for Kansas City in the regular season. Furthermore, the Chiefs already released Marquez Valdes-Scantling, who was fourth on the team with 315 receiving yards last season. Kadarius Toney was a massive disappointment and has showed no signs that he will improve. Mecole Hardman, who caught the game-winning touchdown in the Super Bowl, is also a free agent.
With the 2024 NFL Draft drawing ever closer, it is logical to think that the Chiefs will target one of the many talented wide receivers early in the draft. If they do, it sounds like Patrick Mahomes has a preference in terms of which one it will be.
Kansas City Chiefs Quarterback Patrick Mahomes Reached Out to Xavier Worthy After the NFL Scouting Combine
Texas wide receiver Xavier Worthy was the talk of the combine after he broke the 40-yard dash record, running it in a blistering 4.21 seconds. In an interview with Tyler Dragon of USA Today, Worthy said:
“I definitely knew I had a chance. I didn’t know it was gonna happen in reality. I came in knowing I was gonna run nothing slower than 4.25. When I ran a 4.25 on my first one, I knew I was gonna break it. Because when I was training, I always ran faster on my second 40. So, I knew I was gonna run faster on that second 40.”
He revealed to Dragon that, after he broke the record, he received a congratulatory text message from Mahomes. The message, according to Worthy, was significant because, if he had it his way, he would get drafted by Kansas City:
“In a perfect world, I definitely would want to go to the Chiefs. Just the way Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs improvise and use you. They had Tyreek Hill. The way they used him, I feel like that would be a perfect fit for me.”
Worthy certainly would be a good addition, especially since MVS was cut. His speed would stretch the defense and open up opportunities for Kelce and other pass catchers.
Xavier Worthy’s College Statistics
Worthy played three seasons at Texas, and had his best season in terms of receiving yards in 2023:
Year | Receptions | Yards | Touchdowns |
2021 | 62 | 981 | 12 |
2022 | 60 | 760 | 9 |
2023 | 75 | 1,014 | 5 |
