The Kansas City Chiefs could lose some key members of the team in free agency, so in order to ensure that they would be able to have continuity, they could very well look at the trade market and assess their replacement options.
With that being said, Washington Commanders defensive tackle Jonathan Allen, as well as Cleveland Browns wide receiver Amari Cooper and Seattle Seahawks wideout Tyler Lockett could be interesting trade targets for them.
Why Kansas City Chiefs Need To Reload in Trade Market
The Bleacher Report scouting department mentioned Allen, Cooper and Lockett as the top trade targets for the Chiefs in the offseason, especially with DT Chris Jones and safety L’Jarius Sneed entering free agency.
Aside from potentially replacing Jones’ production with Allen, the report also mentioned how the Chiefs could use some help on offense after a rather inconsistent year from their wide receiving group. Kansas City led the league in dropped passes in 2023, so the team could certainly use some stability on that end.
While the Chiefs will likely remain as Super Bowl contenders even if they don’t find external replacements for their outgoing players, it surely improves their odds of consistently competing for the title if they can find ways to still improve.
Here’s what the BR report said about the Chiefs’ needs:
The Chiefs could lose both Jones and L’Jarius Sneed, and they are still going to enter 2024 as one of the Super Bowl favorites. They aren’t flush with cash, but they also aren’t in dire straights. So they could swing a trade for a veteran who could help, especially if they let Jones go.
If they do that, then someone like Jonathan Allen could help backfill some of the production lost. But going out and getting another receiver who could team up with Rashee Rice to give Patrick Mahomes a trusty duo isn’t a bad option either. Both Tyler Lockett and Amari Cooper are proven options who would save their current teams significant cap space if they were traded away.
The Chiefs will certainly get more lethal if they can add any of Allen, Cooper or Lockett. Of course trading for those established players comes with its own difficulties. For one, Allen himself is under a $72 million contract with the Commanders that would pay him $14 million in 2024.
Kansas City Chiefs’ Focus Is on the Super Bowl For Now
While it’s certainly worth thinking what moves the Kansas City Chiefs should do in the offseason, they can’t really focus on such things for now. After all, they still have Super Bowl 58 to play.
Patrick Mahomes and Co. are heavy underdogs against the San Francisco 49ers, though they have proven time and time again that they should never be counted out when it comes to the postseason. The Chiefs had been underdogs for the most part of the 2024 postseason, but look at where they are now.
Should the Chiefs win the Super Bowl once again, recruiting in the offseason should make their life easier as well. So for now, the best thing to do for them is let the playoffs play out.
