Plenty of people doubted the Kansas City Chiefs heading to the playoffs. While their defense is great–even the best ever in the Patrick Mahomes era–their offense took a massive step back. With that said, many didn’t believe Andy Reid’s men would be able to make it back to the Super Bowl to defend their title.
The criticisms are fair, and all the underdog labels that the Chiefs have been given are warranted. Nonetheless, if people think that this is still the same Kansas City team that struggled during the regular season, then they are absolutely wrong.
What Changed for Andy Reid and Kansas City Chiefs?
The Chiefs have already learned their lesson and have woken up from their slumber after an erratic and inconsistent 2023 season. And what caused that? Apparently, it’s their loss to the Las Vegas Raiders on Christmas Day during Week 16.
According to Reid himself, that brutal 20-14 defeat was a massive “wake-up” call for the whole team. Sure enough, the Chiefs haven’t lost since then, now winning five straight–including playoff victories against the Miami Dolphins, Buffalo Bills and Baltimore Ravens.
“I think that was a good wake-up call for us. They came out with great emotion. Antonio [Pierce] had them ready to go. But that emotion was the thing that jumped out at you, that they played with. I think it gave our guys a nice little — for [lack of] a better term — a wake-up call, that we need to step things up here, that things aren’t just going to fall in our lap,” Reid said on Monday while speaking to reporters on a video conference, via Pro Football Talk.
“And so, we’re taking everybody’s best shot, and here’s a team that went through some adversity and they stepped up and were able to present themselves like they did.”
Reid added that they “were able to learn from it and move on.” He also emphasized that the “little kick in the tail” was exactly what they needed to play to their full potential.
Sure enough, that couldn’t have come at a better time for the Chiefs. Had they won, they would have probably played with complacency heading to the postseason, and that’s a recipe for disaster considering how hungry postseason teams are.
The Chiefs have been able to flip the switch. Now, they are heading to the Super Bowl with a chance for back-to-back championships.
Kansas City Chiefs Underdogs Once Again
While the Kansas City Chiefs are on a roll, things won’t be easy for them heading to the Super Bowl. The big game has never been easy anyway.
Nonetheless, this time, the Chiefs enter the showdown as underdogs against a star-studded San Francisco 49ers squad. The odds are against them, even if they have proven time and time again that they should never be counted out.
Unlike the teams they have played before, however, the 49ers have been a consistent team on all areas. They have a Top 2 offense, and their defense isn’t bad either.
With that said, if the Chiefs want to pull off another upset, they will have to play with the same hunger and motivation like what they have shown over the past couple of weeks.
