The Kansas City Chiefs held practice on Thursday to prepare for this year’s Super Bowl against the San Francisco 49ers, but multiple players were not seen on the practice field including their All-Pro offensive lineman.
Kansas City Chiefs All-Pro Joe Thuney Missed Thursday’s Practice Due to a Pectoral Injury
Joe Thuney, who was selected to this year’s All-Pro team by the Associated Press was not seen at practice on Thursday due to the pectoral injury that kept him out of last week’s AFC Championship versus the Baltimore Ravens.
Chiefs Head Coach told reporters that Thuney was held out of practice today, but is making progress towards a return and has not ruled out of playing in next Sunday’s Super Bowl just yet.
Thuney Received Multiple Diagnoses for His Pectoral Injury Last Week
#Chiefs All-Pro guard Joe Thuney received varying opinions for his pectoral injury, sources say. Some experts believe it’s torn, others believe it’s a strain. Surgery is being considered. After being knocked out of the divisional round two weeks ago versus the Buffalo Bills, Thuney scheduled an MRI and visited multiple doctors. Some experts believe it was just a strain and others think it was a tear. Surgery was also considered while being diagnosed, but with Reid’s comments on Thursday, that option seems unlikely.
While Thuney is seeming like a long shot to suit up against the 49ers next Sunday, there is still optimism that he can log practice participation and work his way back into the starting lineup. Backup left guard Nick Allegretti stepped up in his place and was able to protect Patrick Mahomes against a stout Ravens defensive front, which gives the Chiefs confidence if Thuney cannot go come next Sunday.
The 2024 Super Bowl Will Take Place at Allegiant Stadium on Sunday, February 11th
Thuney will have at least one week before Kansas City travels to Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas and take on the 49ers. If he is not able to suit up in the Super Bowl, expect Allegretti to step up in his place and take snaps on the offensive line once again.
