The Kansas City Chiefs could lose Chris Jones in free agency, so there is a huge need for them to find a reliable replacement for him. Washington Commanders defensive tackle Jonathan Allen has been named as a possible target, but the question is: Can the Chiefs acquire him?
Interestingly, there is a deal that could work for the Chiefs and Commanders that would land the Patrick Mahomes-led squad the two-time Pro Bowler who is still on his four-year, $72 million contract.
Kansas City Chiefs-Washington Commanders Trade Proposal for Jonathan Allen
In the same report from the Bleacher Report scouting department that named Allen as a possible trade target for the Chiefs in the offseason, a mock trade was proposed that could benefit both sides.
The Commanders’ future is uncertain and they are in the middle of a rebuild, so trading Allen for multiple draft picks could be enticing for them.
As for the Chiefs, while Allen isn’t on the same level as Jones, he is the next best thing they could have in which the impact of Jones’ possible exit would be lessened.
Kansas City would have to part ways with two 2024 picks in the second- and fourth-rounds, but that seems a small price to pay to make sure they have continuity.
Here’s what the BR report wrote on the trade proposal:
The Chiefs need wide receivers, but they can probably find some answers in the second and third waves of free agency. Finding a defensive tackle who can affect the game the way that Chris Jones does will be nearly impossible.
Jonathan Allen can’t quite do that. Jones’ production at the position is nearly unmatched. He does, however, fit into the tier below Jones. He had 43 total pressures this season compared to Jones’ 67.
Jeremy Fowler of ESPN reported that Allen has let the Commanders know that he is not excited to be around for more rebuilding, so there’s a chance Washington could decide to deal him. The Chiefs would have to take on his $14 million salary, but that’s a lot more manageable than bringing back Jones.
In the even that the Chiefs are unable to keep Jones, they definitely want to explore a trade for Allen. For now, though, they can think about it when the Super Bowl is over and the offseason comes.
Jonathan Allen Stats vs. Chris Jones’ Stats With Kansas City Chiefs
In 16 regular season games with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2023, Chris Jones tallied 10.5 sacks along with 30 combined tackles, 13 tackles for loss and 29 QB hits.
That outstanding display earned Jones his fifth straight Pro Bowl berth this 2023 season, as well as second straight First-Team All Pro honor.
Meanwhile, Allen finished the 2023 campaign with 5.5 sacks along with 53 total tackles, 23 tackles for loss and 19 QB hits. He’s a two-time Pro Bowler, but he didn’t make the cut this past season.
