New York Giants: Justin Fields Named A Top 2025 Free Agent Option To Replace Daniel Jones

A New York Giants insider thinks the team could be a good fit for former Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Justin Fields in the 2025 offseason. Daniel Jones will enter the upcoming season in the hot seat after signing a frontloaded four-year, $160 million deal last year. The Giants would only eat $22.2 million in dead cap if they release Jones after the season.

The Pittsburgh Steelers traded for Justin Fields

The Pittsburgh Steelers made Justin Fields a key figure in their quarterback roster overhaul this offseason. After a disappointing showing at OTAs, he’s currently projected to be their QB2 behind Russell Wilson. Wilson and Fields are only under contract with Pittsburgh for one season, and one, if not both, quarterbacks could sign with new teams in 2025.

The New York Giants have a few options in free agency next year

Dan Duggan with The Athletic wrote a piece on the Giants quarterback options next year. Duggan named Dak Prescott, Wilson, and Fields as the Giants’ top options in free agency next year. If the Dallas Cowboys don’t retain him, Prescott will be one of the most sought-after quarterbacks in the league. With salary expectations of $60 million annually, Prescott wouldn’t be a cheap option to replace Jones.

Fields would fit the Giants’ scheme

Wilson met with the Giants before signing with the Steelers. He chose the Steelers over the Giants because New York didn’t seem to think he could beat out Jones for the QB1 job. Duggan thinks Fields could have upside with the Giants because his style fits what they have in Jones:

Fields is a wild-card entry. Traded by the Bears to Pittsburgh in March to serve as Wilson’s backup, Fields was the No. 11 pick in the 2021 draft. He showed some promise in three seasons with the Bears, but not enough to prevent them from taking USC’s Caleb Williams with the No. 1 pick in this year’s draft.

Fields profiles similar to Jones as a dual-threat quarterback with limitations as a passer. Fields would be a prove-it/bridge option if the Giants move on from Jones. Fields has more upside than other bridge options like Sam Darnold and Mac Jones.

Green Bay’s Jordan Love and Miami’s Tua Tagovailoa weren’t considered even though they’re set to enter the final year of their existing deals. It’s widely expected they’ll sign extensions with their current teams or at least get franchise tags next offseason.

At 25 and with two seasons of starting experience, Fields has a higher potential ceiling than Jones or Wilson (Wilson will turn 37 during the 2025 season). He could be a wise choice to bring in on the cheap while the Giants try to find alternative options at quarterback in the draft.

Justin, please DO NOT GO to the New York Giants as a 2025 Free Agent. HORRIBLE-ORGANIZATION that have DESTROYED Daniel Jones Career. Stay with Coach Tomlin and the Pittsburgh Steelers! Be patient, stay focused, and keep working. The RIGHT-OPPORTUNITY for you is coming!
