Dak Prescott will be the Dallas Cowboys quarterback for the 2024 season. After that, all bets are off. Prescott has one year remaining on his contract coming into the offseason.
Prescott’s play during the regular season had him in contention for the NFL MVP award. It appeared the franchise quarterback would be headed toward a big extension this offseason. But his disappointing performance in the playoffs might have owner Jerry Jones reconsidering his position on the most important piece of the team’s roster.
Dak Prescott has more to show in 2024
Per Todd Archer with ESPN, Jones said he thinks Prescott can play better in 2024:
“But my point is that we can be better. Dak [Prescott] can play better than he has maybe, we could argue one of the best years he’s ever had in his career. But the good news is, I’m convinced that he can play better and I’m convinced that we can do some things better all the way around and so we’re all in.”
The Dallas Cowboys need more money
But, as Archer points out, the team’s salary cap is at stake while Jones and Prescott’s agent negotiate:
“Prescott’s contract expires after 2024 and the Cowboys cannot place the franchise tag on him in 2025. Without an extension, Prescott is set to count $59.45 million against the salary cap. The Cowboys can lower his cap figure with a new deal that could make him one of the highest-paid quarterbacks in the NFL or simply restructure his current deal and create about $18 million in room while adding to dead money in 2025.”
The team needs to create more cap space soon if they want to go all in for 2024. The Cowboys are letting All-Pro left tackle Tyron Smith hit free agency. The team is already $10 million in the red before free agency begins. Micah Parsons has a list of wants for the defense that won’t be cheap.
Jerry Jones hints Prescott could be out in 2025
Despite logistically needing to get something done with Prescott, Jones said he’s not worried about his quarterback to free agency next offseason:
“What we do there or don’t do [with Prescott’s contract], I couldn’t say at this time,” Jones said, “but the main thing is he’s going to be our quarterback.”
Jones’ words “don’t do” are the critical part of that quote. Jones is making it public that there is a possibility the Cowboys will not extend Prescott this offseason or before he hits free agency next year.
