The Browns had a pretty disappointing 21-20 loss against the Eagles on Sunday. But, a pretty big bright spot was how good quarterback Josh Dobbs performed.
The one play that caught most people’s eyes was his 36-yard run.

Head coach Kevin Stefanski has been impressed with Dobbs before, especially after the Browns’ game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
“He does a nice job in and out of the huddle, sees it very clearly, and I think his athleticism really showed up. Certainly had a couple of scrambles, had the touchdown where he had a free runner right in his face going to his left, extended the play and dumped it over to Jerome, so an impressive performance by Josh.”
Sadly, most of the attention in that game was on Deshaun Watson, but Dobbs did play really well. So, that brings up a crazy question for Dobbs’ future with the Browns.
Can Josh Dobbs Get the Starting Job?
The simple answer to this question is no. With how confident Andrew Berry and the Browns are with Jacoby Brissett, he will not be getting the starting job.
“We have a lot of confidence in Jacoby. We have seen him play in Indianapolis and Miami. We have seen him here on the practice field. We think he has had a really good camp, so we have a lot of confidence.”
And then Amari Cooper later went on to express the same amount of confidence that the Browns’ front office has.
“I’m very confident. This is his seventh year. You don’t get opportunities to play at quarterback in Year 7 if you haven’t proven yourself. And just from practicing with him, getting reps with him, he throws a good ball. I really like the ball he throws. He’s smart. He really has a good understanding of ball placement and route-running.”
With how confident they are, Brissett will definitely be the starter. But, we can think about if Dobbs will be the backup to Brissett with Kevin Stefanski saying this:
“I think everything is a competition. All of these players are earning their role. Josh Dobbs is farther along because he has been with us [longer] than Josh Rosen, but everything is a competition.”
The Browns have one preseason game left, and that’s against the Bears. But, it was said that Brissett will be the starter in that game.
#Browns Kevin Stefanski said Jacoby Brissett will play in the third preseason game.

We should expect Dobbs to get some playing time, though. So, if he can keep this performance up, Dobbs should be put in the backup role behind Jacoby Brissett.
