Coach Jim Harbaugh has been a coaching free agent as he has been looking at the NFL as well as working towards a contract extension with the Michigan Wolverines after winning the national championship. It is being reported by multiple sources that Jim Harbaugh and the Los Angeles Chargers are within “striking distance” of signing a deal.
This would essentially mean that time is running out for the Michigan Wolverines to get him to potentially return. But what would this mean and is this the best landing spot for Harbaugh?
Does Jim Harbaugh and the Los Angeles Chargers make the most sense?
The Los Angeles Chargers have been struggling to figure out an identity and having him take over makes a lot of sense. Aaron Wilson is reporting that the coaching staff is in place. Greg Roman would be the offensive coordinator, Jesse Minter is the defensive coordinator and his son Jay Harbaugh would head the special teams unit.
Harbaugh has a pretty good core of players if he were to land the Los Angeles Chargers job. The top proponent would be having quarterback Justin Herbert return from his thumb injury. This job would be very attractive and it will be interesting to see if Harbaugh gets power in personnel decisions.
The Chargers struggled this season as they are 21st in the NFL with 20.4 points per game while their defense needs some improvement with 23.4 points per game allowed, which is 24th in the sport. There are some intriguing free agents leaving like running back Austin Ekeler so they need to figure out what the direction is going to be.
The AFC West is going to be interesting with Andy Reid, Sean Payton and Antonio Pierce, this may be the best coaching division in football. This is going to be a challenge but this is the best opening for Jim Harbaugh to explore.
