The Dallas Cowboys and Dak Prescott remain locked in a contract stalemate as training camp gets underway, casting doubt about the quarterback’s future as the market has exploded around both sides and owner Jerry Jones this offseason.

As Prescott enters the 2024 campaign potentially playing out the final year of his contract and is looking for a new deal amid the backdrop of Jared Goff, Trevor Lawrence, and Kirk Cousins each signing massive contract extensions this offseason with the Green Bay Packers potentially primed to make Jordan Love the highest-paid player at the position across the sport.
However, despite seemingly minimal progress being made towards reaching a pact, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones struck an optimistic tone about the state of negotiations and Prescott’s future in Dallas.
“I don’t think so,” Jones told reporters during his annual state of the franchise press conference on July 25, when asked if this is Prescott’s final season in a Cowboys uniform. “Just to be very specific. I do not think this will be his last year with the Cowboys, at all. Am I being psychotic relative to my mirror? No, no.
“It’s pretty clear, I think. I want to say if it hasn’t been clear — of how much we appreciate what Dak Prescott has meant to this team in a positive way. The players do play better when he’s out there. He does make his teammates play at a higher level there’s no question about it. So I’m right there in line with his best fan.”
Dallas Cowboys Have Shown Little Urgency to Re-Sign Dak Prescott

Given the contracts signed by quarterbacks across the NFL, a potentially limited veteran market at the position next offseason, and the fact that Prescott has averaged 3,682 passing yards per season through the first eight years of his career with 202 career touchdowns to 74 interceptions, the cost to keep the 30-year-old in Dallas may rise exponentially the longer negotiations drag on.
Prescott is set to count $55.1 million against the cap for the Cowboys this season, and slated to become an unrestricted free agent next March.
It remains quizzical that the Cowboys didn’t make extending Prescott a bigger priority this offseason, given that the franchise still must figure out how to sign All-Pro edge rusher Micah Parsons and dynamic wide receiver CeeDee Lamb to new deals, as well.
