The San Francisco 49ers have a lot of negative attention entering training. This is because two of their most notable players on offense have threatened to hold out unless they get their contracts restructured. As a result, the 49ers were forced to take drastic action with one of these players this afternoon. Read below to find out what San Francisco did.
San Francisco 49ers Place OT Trent Williams on Reserve List
According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, the 49ers have officially placed OT Trent Williams on their reserve/did not report list. This is Williams’ 15th season in the NFL and his fifth with the 49ers. He is due to receive just over $20 million in base salary this season. However, this does not appear to be enough for Williams, as he is now demanding a raise.
So, what does it mean now that Williams is officially on this list? For one thing, it adds some legitimacy from previous reports of Williams planning to hold out. Second of all, it gives the 49ers a contingency plan in case this does not get resolved soon. If this stretches into the regular season, San Francisco will have an extra roster spot available along with the $20 million in salary cap space originally dedicated to Williams.
Other Notable Player on Reserve List in NFL
Williams is not the only big name that got placed on a team’s reserve/did not report list. Earlier today, the New York Jets placed LB Haason Reddick on their reserve/did not report list. Reddick’s situation is even more complicated considering he got traded to the Jets earlier this offseason rather than having been on the team for four years already.
San Francisco 49ers Moving Forward
The 49ers are facing some significant holdout issues as their training camp gets underway. As mentioned above, this latest list placement shows that the Williams situation has escalated. However, there is another notable name to keep an eye on.
That name is Brandon Aiyuk. While the 49ers star wide receiver did show up to training camp, things took a turn for the worse yesterday. That is because he was seen leaving training camp after having a private discussion with 49ers GM John Lynch.
Aiyuk is another notable 49ers offensive weapon looking for a new contract. Now, we will have to see if he ends up on the team’s reserve list as well.
