Jalen Hurts is about to get paid
Jalen Hurts had a fantastic season with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2022. A new report states he’s about to get compensated like a top quarterback in the NFL. Hurts will enter year four of his rookie contract for the 2023 season. But the Eagles might strike a deal before it expires next offseason.
Hurts increased his pay value after a season where he finished second in the NFL MVP race. He played a near-perfect game in the Super Bowl and could have won the Super Bowl MVP. However, his one blunder, a fumble returned for a touchdown, proved costly in the game’s final score tally. Hurts and the Eagles only came second to Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs for the 2022 season.
That’s to be expected. Mahomes is the top quarterback in the league. And Hurts is only just coming into his territory.
Where Hurts value is after the 2022 season
According to Ralph Vacchiano with Fox Sports, Hurts could see a raise in the ballpark of other elite quarterbacks in the league. Vacchiano reported that Hurts likely wouldn’t get the approximately $50 million a year that veterans Aaron Rodgers and Russell Willson get per annum, but he’ll be close to that figure:
“The floor is actually higher than the six-year, $258 million contract the Buffalo Bills gave quarterback Josh Allen in 2021 when he still had two years left on his rookie contract. Allen’s deal, worth $43 million per season, made him the NFL’s second-highest-paid player at the time, though he hadn’t gotten the Bills past the AFC Championship Game…
Multiple NFL agents suggest a more likely slot for Hurts is third on the list, ahead of Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray, who will make an average of $46.1 million per year on the five-year, $230.5 million extension he signed last summer. None of the agents thought Hurts would end up with less than the deal Murray got.”
That’s a good deal for Jalen Hurts and not a bad one for the Eagles. Hurts is only 24 years old, or three years younger than Mahomes. Hurts has made progress each season he’s been in the NFL. The Eagles could have a franchise quarterback for a long time with Hurts. The challenge is keeping championship talent on the roster when paying Hurts his due. Top quarterbacks like Mahomes can overcome that challenge.
