Baker Mayfield was easily the most exciting player to watch in college, but that didn’t transition into the NFL. He threw for 43 touchdowns and only 6 interceptions in his senior year at Oklahoma. After 4 years in Cleveland, Baker has a 29-30 record with 92 touchdowns and 56 interceptions. Cleveland thought they were getting their next franchise quarterback, but that wasn’t the case.
Baker did not take the news of the Browns signing Deshaun Watson well and requested a trade after finding out it was finalized. Finally, after a couple weeks on the trading block, the Carolina Panthers decided to take a chance on Baker.
Baker’s offensive weapons to ease some of the pressure off of him
Is Baker the Answer for the Panthers?
The Panthers have struggled drastically with the quarterback position since before Cam Newton left in 2020. However, the depth under center this year looks very promising. They currently have Baker Mayfield listed as their QB 1, with the likes of Sam Darnold, newly drafted Matt Corral, and XFL star PJ Walker competing for a job as well. As a result, the Panthers have the potential to be one of the most exciting quarterback battles in training camp, which starts in less than two weeks.
The Panthers open their season at home against the Cleveland Browns on September 11th. Mayfield already has his eyes set on that game, saying it was “going to be special,” he told Charolette-area media in a zoom conference.
He would love to put up electric numbers to show Cleveland what could have been. Baker had a lot of pressure coming into the NFL as the number 1 draft pick with not many weapons on offense. Finally, Mayfield could be relieved of some pressure with players like Christian McCaffrey, DJ Moore, Chuba Hubbard, and Robbie Anderson around him. Baker Mayfield could be the answer for the Carolina Panthers to get back into the playoffs, but only time will tell.
