Even though this is something that’s never happened before, the Iowa Hawkeyes seem to be in familiar territory. For the third time in November, the Hawkeyes are going to play in a game with a record-low betting total. Several sportsbooks have Iowa’s Week 13 matchup against Nebraska set at a 24.5-point total. The FBS era has never reached this level before.
So last year, Iowa set the record at 31.5 twice toward the end of the season. This year, they’ve already set it three times. When Friday’s game kicks off, the Iowa Hawkeyes will break their own record for the fourth time in the 2023 season.
For context, 86 FBS schools (64.7%) woke up on Thanksgiving scoring more than 24.5 points per game this season. Only one other game this weekend has a total below 40 points. What’s crazy is that all of Iowa’s previous record-setting totals all finished as comfortable wins for under bettors. Let’s see if the streak will continue.
The Iowa Hawkeyes Thrive in These Games
Along with each record-setting game so far finishing under the total, Iowa’s only loss in those contests came against Minnesota this season. The Big Ten West champions only allow 12.4 points per game, the third-fewest in the nation. Stifling defense paired with the best net average on punt attempts make it impossible for most teams to score on the Hawkeyes. Slowly, Iowa drags their opponents into the mud with them.
On the flip side, this offense averages fewer yards per game (246.5) than any other in the country, hence the consistently low totals. 18.5 points per game has been enough to earn a Big Ten title shot but cost the Iowa Hawkeyes any opportunity at the playoffs. Change is coming offensively this offseason, but they still have three games left at their current state. Enjoy this once-in-a-lifetime football team before it’s too late. They have three more chances to play historically low-scoring contests.
