With the first week of the NFL season in the books many people are quick to judge teams and/or players. Let’s dive into some overreactions and some under reactions from the first week of the season.
Overreaction: The Packers are in trouble
The Minnesota Vikings flat out dominated the Green Bay Packers. There is no getting around that fact. However, they lost 38-3 to the Saints in week one of last season and they ended up finishing the year 13-4 and they won the NFC North. No longer having Davante Adams will make this season more challenging for Green Bay however Aaron Rodgers is one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL and Green Bay will be a contender once again.
Important: Giants beat Titans 21-20
This game was very important for both teams. Tennessee had major questions coming into this season after trading star wide receiver AJ Brown to the Eagles and after this game many of those questions did not get answered. Nobody emerged as the new WR1 for Ryan Tannehill and Derrick Henry had a subpar game on the ground. They did not look like the one seed they were last year at all. As for the Giants, Saquon Barkley looked rejuvenated and the defense played well holding Derrick Henry to 82 yards rushing. New head coach Brian Daboll has instilled confidence into the Giants and it showed on Sunday. Tennessee will have to find a way to bounce back after a really bad loss to start the season.
Overreaction: The Bengals are a one year wonder
The Bengals, coming off of a super bowl appearance, dropped their first game of the season at home to the Steelers. This was an incredibly ugly game from Cincinnati as quarterback Joe Burrow had five turnovers and kicker Evan McPherson missed a field goal and an extra point. With that being said the Bengals still almost won the game which shows there is no need to panic. The Bengals defense played very well and Burrow most likely won’t play that poorly again all season. The Bengals are still set up for a successful year.
Important: The Cowboys get dominated, lose Dak
The first three quarters were bad enough for Dallas on Sunday Night. The Bucs were dominating and they could not score points. Dallas was the only team that did not score a touchdown in the NFL in week one. Then quarterback Dak Prescott got hurt and things went from bad to worse. Prescott is expected to miss 6-8 weeks. This would not be as big of a deal if the Cowboy’s offense had looked somewhat functional. But only scoring 3 points and losing your quarterback? This is a recipe for disaster.
