The Houston Texans are among the favorites to land New York Giants running back and pending free agent Saquon Barkley once his deal with the NFC East division franchise expires in March. Texans general manager Nick Caserio, while at the 2024 NFL Combine in Indianapolis, didn’t help quell the rumors linking Barkley to Houston, by being a little vague with his statement on his team’s running back situation.
Via Jonathan M. Alexander of the Houston Chronicle:
“Our job is to try to find good football players and add good players to our team,” Caserio said when asked how he thought the free-agent market would play out at running back. “We have a couple free agents at that position, so we’re going to evaluate that position like we do other positions.
The running back position is one the Texans are certainly looking to address in the offseason, with Devin Singletary also one of the many pending free agents on the team. Should Singletary end up leaving the team to test the waters of NFL free agency, that would mean Houston will not have its leading rusher in 2023. That season. Singletary paced the Texans with 898 rushing yards to go with four touchdowns on 216 carries.
Does Saquon Barkley Make Sense For The Houston Texans?
Barkley’s best days in the NFL may be behind him now even though he’s just 27 years old. However, a better offensive environment than the Giants could maximize whatever juice is left in his legs. Just less than two years ago, he rushed for 1,312 yards and 10 touchdowns for the Giants in 2022 before racking up 962 rushing yards and six touchdowns in 2023.
