After entering the previous season with low expectations, the Houston Texans came out and surprised everyone by becoming one of the best teams in the NFL. But now, as free agency is starting to loom closer, there’s a chance Dalton Schultz might not be part of the lineup anymore.
While many people expected the Texans to still be in their rebuilding phase, the arrival of C.J. Stroud sped up the process. As a result, Houston made the playoffs for the first time since 2019 with a win over the Indianapolis Colts in Week 18.
From there, the Texans rose to the top of the AFC South division with a 10-7 record. The team continued its strong momentum in the wild card round when Houston eliminated the Cleveland Browns in a dominant manner.
Even though the Texans eventually fell to the Baltimore Ravens and an MVP-level performance from Lamar Jackson, the future of the team has never looked brighter than before.
Houston Texans’ Dalton Schultz Projected To Get A Salary Bump In Free Agency
Among the players entering free agency from Houston’s current roster is Dalton Schultz. Bill Barnwell explains how he can get a bigger contract soon in his article for ESPN:
“Schultz was franchise-tagged for just under $11 million during his final season in Dallas in 2022, but after hitting the market a year ago, he signed a one-year contract for $6.3 million with Houston. This is probably his best chance at a multiyear guarantee, so I would expect him to split those two figures, either by re-signing with Houston or heading elsewhere.
For teams that desperately need receiving help, signing Schultz would be a relatively low-cost way to add a middle-of-the-field and red zone target for a young quarterback. The Commanders, Patriots and Colts should be interested. One under-the-radar team might be the Rams.
They don’t typically make signings like this because it impacts their compensatory formula, but they have a hole at tight end with Tyler Higbee potentially missing the start of the 2024 season (knee). Average annual salary projection: $11 million per year,” Barnwell wrote.
It remains to be seen whether Schultz will stay in Houston or find greener pastures elsewhere. What’s certain is there’ll be a demand for his skillset, and he’ll be signed to a new contract once free agency is over.
