The Houston Texans have approximately $70 million in cap space and have many free agents this offseason. One of their free agents is their starting cornerback, and the team is interested in an extension.
The Houston Texans are interested in re-signing their starting cornerback.
According to Aaron Wilson of KPRC2, Houston is interested in re-signing Steven Nelson.

General manager Nick Caserio praised Nelson for the year he had.
“Steve had a great year, lot of respect for the way Steve handled himself and the way he played this year,” Caserio said. “Similar to a lot of other players we’ll work through the process there. There are a lot of good players who are out there in free agency, including some of our players we’re going to have somebody playing opposite Stingley so we’ll kind of work through it here in the next few weeks to see where we end up.”
Nelson had a solid tenure with Houston.
Nelson signed a 2-year, $9 million contract during the 2022 offseason. Nelson appeared in 15 games in 2022, recording 52 tackles, one interception, seven pass deflections, and one forced fumble. He allowed 37 receptions on 62 targets for 367 yards, two touchdowns, and an 80.5 passer rating.
Nelson signed a restructured contract worth up to $6.5 million on August 3, 2023. Nelson appeared in 17 games in 2023, recording 63 tackles, four interceptions, and 12 pass deflections, and allowed 43 receptions on 70 targets for 657 yards, one touchdown, and a 73.3 passer rating. He also had 12 tackles, one interception, one pick-six, and three pass deflections in two playoff games.
Houston’s plan if they don’t re-sign Nelson.
If Houston decides to let Nelson walk, they could address the position in free agency. Notable cornerbacks who are free agents include Xavien Howard, Adoree’ Jackson, Kendall Fuller, Stephon Gilmore, Kenny Moore, and Jaylon Johnson, to name a few.
Finally, if they do not sign any free-agent cornerbacks, Houston will address the position in the draft.
