After a surprising run last year, the Green Bay Packers hope the upcoming season will be better for them. If the team plans to surpass what it recently accomplished, the front office has to surround Jordan Love with high-impact players, such as the New York Giants’ Xavier McKinney.
After a trade that sent Aaron Rodgers to the New York Jets, many expected the team to sink in the standings. Rightfully so, because fielding the league’s youngest roster won’t really mean that much against more experienced lineups in the NFL.
But against all odds, the Packers managed to snag a playoff spot after placing second in the NFC North division with a 9-8 record. From there, Green Bay dismantled the Dallas Cowboys, mostly because of Love’s masterful performance on the field in that particular game.
Even though the Packers collapsed against the San Francisco 49ers in the following round, many were still surprised by how good the team has been. For the front office, though, there’s no better time to strike than now by adding more quality players around Love.
Why The Green Bay Packers Must Consider Xavier McKinney In Free Agency To Bring More Help for Jordan Love
Jordan Love’s breakout season stands the chance to become better next season, especially if the Packers sign McKinney, a safety who’s projected to bag a $52 million contract in free agency. Aaron Schatz explains more in his article for ESPN:
“The top three safeties on Green Bay’s depth chart are all free agents: Darnell Savage, Rudy Ford and Jonathan Owens. So this is a position where the Packers need to do some work. McKinney will be 26 years old next season and is a flexible player who can serve either as a free safety deep or a strong safety in the box.
He had the best coverage DVOA among the Giants’ defensive backs last season and had a career-high 116 combined tackles with 11 passes defensed and three interceptions,” Schatz wrote.
Adding McKinney to the lineup will yield dividends for the Packers’ defense in their upcoming campaign later this year. As it stands, Green Bay’s defense was ranked 10th last season.
If all goes well, the Packers’ defense may get better with McKinney as their new safety. This, in turn, will help Green Bay get over the hump next season, especially with Love projected to take another leap.
