The other day, I wrote an article about how the New York Giants failed Daniel Jones. While I certainly was not the first one to believe that or to point it out, it does make me happy that only a few days after I wrote that article, former Giants wide receiver and teammate of Daniel Jones, Golden Tate, came out and said he feels bad for the Giants quarterback.
What Golden Tate Said
Since playing his final two NFL seasons with the New York Giants (2019 and 2020), Tate has gone on to focus on golf and baseball. He talked to the media while preparing for a new golf tournament called the Icons Series that he’ll soon be competing in. While addressing the media, Tate talked about how he felt bad for Daniel Jones because of the environment that Jones has been in.
Tate mentioned how difficult it’s been for Daniel Jones to get comfortable on the field. He said Daniel Jones hasn’t been able to be comfortable because of the coaches and personnel around him. Those are both points that I made in my article the other day, but there was another thing that Golden Tate brought up that I didn’t mention in my recent article, which is a great point and that point is injuries.
A Giant Injury Bug
Daniel Jones himself hasn’t had any major injuries so far, but his teammates have fallen like dominos. Of course, we all know Saquon Barkley hasn’t been able to stay on the field to help Daniel Jones much, but let’s not forget that Golden Tate struggled to stay healthy during his time on the team. Other receivers like Kenny Golladay and Sterling Shepard have also struggled to stay on the field.
Kenny Golladay suffered a variety of injuries throughout last season and missed a fair amount of time as a result. It feels like Sterling Shepard gets a new hamstring/quad injury every other week and misses time because of it. It’s hard for a quarterback to be effective when he’s spending half the season throwing to practice squad wide receivers.
Conclusion
Do I believe that Daniel Jones is the savior of the New York Giants? No, not really. I will defend him, however, because they have not given him a fair chance. When Golden Tate, a super bowl champion and pro bowl wide receiver, says that he’s looking forward to seeing Daniel Jones play, that means something.
It’s important that a professional player is given a fair and valid chance to prove themselves and the Giants have yet to do that with Daniel Jones. This year, with Brian Daboll, is an opportunity to see what Daniel Jones is truly capable of in a (hopefully) competent offense and (hopefully) his key teammates stay healthy and on the field.
