Seattle Seahawks quarterback Geno Smith is dealing with an injury to his groin and there have been some discussions about if he is going to be able to play on Sunday against the San Francisco 49ers, per Adam Schefter. The injury is considered to be a two-week injury and he is going to test it out during pregame warmups and is officially listed as questionable for the game.
There have been no assurances that he will be able to play on Sunday in a pivotal game for the Seattle Seahawks as their playoff chances have been dwindling. Smith is known for playing through injury so it will be interesting to see how he is able to go.
Seahawks coach Pete Carroll said on Friday that the starting quarterback “tweaked his groin a little bit” during Thursday’s practice after stumbling over someone. Geno Smith has been banged up entering this game already as he has been battling a knee and triceps injury throughout the year. He was listed as limited for Thursday and a nonparticipant on Friday.
Geno Smith has fallen back down to earth after last season as he is 259-of-402 (64.4 percent) for 2,918 yards with 15 passing touchdowns to nine interceptions. On Thanksgiving against this San Francisco 49ers team, he finished 18-of-27 for 180 yards and an interception.
Can the Seattle Seahawks win if Geno Smith is ruled out?
If Geno Smith is unable to play in this game, backup quarterback Drew Lock will be under center and has not looked good in limited action. So far this season, he is just 4-of-12 (33.3 completion percentage) for 66 yards with an interception.
However, in the year of the backup quarterback, Lock could have a good game as he has been a starting quarterback earlier in his career. The Seattle Seahawks need to win this game to keep their hopes for the NFC Wild Card alive. Currently. they are on the outside looking in in terms of a playoff spot as they are 6-6 and ninth in the NFC.
This 49ers defense is tough to match up against so it will be interesting to see how they can take advantage of a depleted quarterback room as they try to capture the top seed in the NFC.
