I have interviewed multiple Hawaii football athletes preparing for the 2023 season. The offseason is in full swing and Hawaii’s athletes need exposure. I have interviewed Kaleb Jackson-Cater, Maclane Watkins, and Ezekiel Rodrigues. This addition features offensive tackle Freddie Pelling. Freddie Pelling is a 6-8 athlete who has an interesting story. Hawaii football should be able to win games with Freddie Pelling anchoring the left or ride side of the offensive line.
Freddie Pelling Background
Freddie Pelling has a unique football background. Freddie Pelling was born in London, England, and didn’t have a direct path to playing college football. Pelling played rugby and cricket before playing football. Pelling started playing football at the NFL Academy. The NFL academy teaches players in London how to play football. Athletes who participate in the academy come to America after mastering the fundamentals of football. Pelling said it was difficult playing for the NFL academy because of Covid-19 and the lack of exposure. However, Pelling learned a lot at the academy. Pelling said, ” Going to the academy taught me how to read defenses, pick up blitzes, and learn the fundamentals of football.”
Pelling also played football for Garden City Community College. Pelling learned how football is played in America. Freddie was challenged at Garden City Community College and had to get out of his comfort zone. Freddie Pelling said there’s more to think about on the collegiate level. Players have to think quickly and digest a lot of information. Pelling said, “The reads are predetermined in high school football.”

Freddie Pelling made a huge decision when he chose to sign with the University of Hawaii. Pelling moved thousands of miles from home and doesn’t see his family much. Pelling connected with running back coach Keiki Misipeka. Misipeka had connections with the NFL Academy and the international player pathway system. Pelling felt supported by Misipeka and decided to join the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors.
Freddie Pelling learned how to play left tackle at the NFL Academy. Pelling flipped the script and played right tackle at Garden City Community College. Pelling played right tackle because a spot was open. Pelling said, ” You have to take the reps where you can find them.” Pelling felt more natural playing left tackle. Playing right tackle Pelling has to think more. Pelling said, ” I have to think about my stance and how far I’m stepping back.” Pelling has been taking reps at left and right tackle during Hawaii’s offseason practices.
Freddie Pelling enjoys the game of football. Pelling said playing football is freeing. Pelling also said the relationships you build with your teammates is incredible.
