As training camp is set to begin, the New England Patriots have one of the most interesting quarterback battles heading into the 2024 season. There are two notable quarterbacks competing for the starting job in New England.
The quarterback getting more attention is rookie Drake Maye. He was selected third overall by the Patriots this past draft. Then, there is veteran QB Jacoby Brissett, who is beginning his second stint in New England.
This morning, Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo revealed who currently has the edge for the starting job. Read below to find out what Mayo had to say.
Jerod Mayo Leans Towards Jacoby Brissett for Starting QB Job
According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, Mayo revealed that Brissett currently looks to have the advantage for the starting QB job for the Patriots. Here is what Mayo had to say about the subject:
“Coming out of spring, I think it’s clear Jacoby (Brissett) is the most pro-ready guy we have.” -Jerod Mayo
Jacoby Brissett’s Career
Brissett has been in the NFL since 2016 and is entering his ninth season. He has been a bit of a journeyman in the NFL thus far. After making his NFL debut with the Patriots in 2016, Brissett spent his next four seasons with the Indianapolis Colts. Since then, he has been on four different teams in four seasons.
So, what has Brissett done over the course of his career? He has started 48 games in eight seasons. In those games, he has 10,574 passing yards and 51 touchdown passes. Brissett also has a 61.3 completion percentage in his career along with 23 interceptions and an 18-30 record.
Hope for Drake Maye With New England Patriots?
While the above quote leans towards Brissett, hope is not lost for Maye. Remember, he is a rookie quarterback who has yet to take a snap in a regular season NFL game. So, it makes sense that Maye is not as pro-ready as Brissett.
However, considering the Patriots used the third overall pick on Maye, he should still get an opportunity to get playing time at some point in the 2024 season. This just might not come out of the gate. With Brissett being a veteran QB entering his ninth season, the quote suggests he will get the nod, but the door is still wide open for Maye to take over the job at some point. We will have to wait and see when this happens.
