The New York Jets have a vital 2024 season coming up. They had a disappointing 2023 season primarily because veteran QB Aaron Rodgers tore his Achilles just four snaps into the season.
Now, the Jets are looking to bounce back in 2024. However, the start of training camp revealed a significant setback towards that goal. New York found out that one of their most important players was going to hold out just as training camp begins.
Haason Reddick Holding Out at Start of Training Camp
According to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, New York Jets LB Haason Reddick is expected to hold out as the team’s training camp is set to begin. This would be a significant setback to the Jets’ defense if an agreement does not get reached before the start of the regular season. However, Reddick has expressed desire for a contract extension since he was originally traded to the Jets this offseason.
How We Got Here
So, how did it come to this? Well, it is no secret that Reddick was not happy about getting traded to the Jets. He was coming from the Philadelphia Eagles and did not seem to want to get traded to New York. Previous reports reveal he has had very limited interaction with head coach Robert Saleh throughout most of this offseason.
This is Reddick’s eighth season in the NFL, having spent his last two seasons with the Eagles. Those two seasons were arguably the best of Reddick’s career. He had 27 sacks and five forced fumbles in that stretch.
As a result, Reddick believes he deserves more security. There is just one year on his current contract where Reddick is expected to earn around $15 million. It is safe to assume that Reddick is looking for more guaranteed money and years than he currently has.
New York Jets Moving Forward
This is a problem the Jets are going to have to address before the regular season begins. You can argue they did not do their due diligence here, as this issue has been lingering throughout the offseason. If it is something the Jets do not end up resolving peacefully, it could put GM Joe Douglas and HC Robert Saleh one step closer to the hot seat. The team has playoff expectations this season they need to live up to.
