Frank Reich hires Josh McCown for the Panthers coaching staff rebuild

Josh McCown, a former NFL QB, was added to the Carolina Panthers coaching staff on Friday as the quarterbacks coach. This move comes after the Panthers hired their new head coach Frank Reich to lead their team in 2023 and (hopefully for Carolina fans) beyond. The Panthers’ coaching staff is in the middle of a rebuild; they have hired Ejiro Evero as defensive coordinator, Peter Hansen as linebackers coach, and Dom Capers as a defensive assistant.
The journeyman QB has been a part of 13 (12 NFL, one UFL) different teams over a 19-year professional football career. His most notable years were the 2013 and 2017 seasons. In 2013, he took over for an injured Jay Cutler where he had a 13:1 touchdown to interception ratio and helped win two games for the Bears. In 2017, he won the starting job for the New York Jets and set career highs in passing yards (2,926) and touchdowns (18).
This will be McCown’s first go as an NFL coach. McCown has most recently interviewed for the Texans’ head coaching job in 2022. He spent time in the 2010-2012 seasons as a volunteer quarterbacks coach for Marvin Ridge High School. His other coaching credentials include an assistant coaching position at Myers Park High School.

McCown isn’t the only former player for the new Panthers coaching staff. Reich himself is a former quarterback, while Hansen played for a European football team, the Cannes Iron Mask, and Eniro is a former college safety.
The Panthers coaching staff appears to shaping up to be very quarterback-friendly. Many mock drafts have the Panthers selecting a QB with their first-round pick. The only QBs the Panthers have on contract are last year’s third-round pick Matt Corral and four-year NFL pro Jacob Eason. Sam Darnold and PJ Walker are set to become free agents this offseason. Whoever Carolina chooses to be their quarterback in 2023 will have a lot of experience to lean on.
