On Thursday, the Washington Commanders announced a major change for their staff starting in November. The Commanders sit at a disappointing 3-4 in Week 8. The Commanders’ slow start has many pundits and oddsmakers speculating head coach Ron Rivera could be the first NFL head coach fired this season.

The Commanders made one change midseason to help the coaching staff.
The Washington Commanders hired Eugene Shen
According to Nicki Jhabvala with the Washington Post, the Commanders hired Eugene Shen to be their senior vice president of football strategy. Shen’s role will help the Commanders’ analytics department for the team’s football operations.

Per John Shipley with Sports Illustrated, Shen has had several NFL jobs before leaving the Jacksonville Jaguars to pursue other interests outside of the league in 2022:
“He got his start in the NFL with the Baltimore Ravens in 2014 as Director of Coaching Analytics, spending nearly five years with the team. In June 2019, he joined the Miami Dolphins as Director of Personnel Analytics.”
Is Eugene Shen getting ready for a new coaching regime?
Shen will return to a team in desperate need of help with their analytics department. Rivera said this summer that he understood new owner Josh Harris would want the Commanders to implement more analytics into the team’s operations.
The Commanders took a major step with this new staffing change. But will Shen’s hire be in time to save Rivera’s job, or will Shen be laying the foundation for the Commanders’ next coaching staff?

We need to get the name back to the Redskins before we are going to start winning on a regular basis
First off, I have been a lifelong redskins/football team/ now commanders. Our first problem is now gone in Dan Snyder, but we are still trying to use his regime left over from the failure that was the Carolina panthers and Ron Rivera and we thought he could take the same crap formula and it would work here. Not gonna happen. How ever there are a few bright spots from that coaching tree but they are assistant coaches or assistant to the assistant. I like Eric Bienemy and I think a full year and actual full off-season Sam Howell and the main Core of the offense Terry McLaurin, Japan Dotson and the other kid from UNC will be okay but we need to spend money on a real coaching staff, a real offensive line and not this oh will take a few bottom dwelling free agents and hope it works. As far as the defense goes we have all the talent in the world, but the schemes are all wrong we need a defensive coach that can run a true hybrid defense and understands it bc the NFL is evolving and the days of a 3-4 or a 4-3 are really over or the nickel defense or the dime also. We the fans can see that what we have in coaching is the problem and if Josh Harris and his group don’t want to be treated the same as Dan Snyder 2.0 in the ways of crappy hires. He needs to come up with someone quick and not some moron doing analytics is gonna help.
Defense is great but in today’s NFL you can’t have an offensive line made out of Swiss cheese…. analytics be damned
