Losing in the Super Bowl is tough for a competitor like Dre Greenlaw. What made it worse for him was that he had to watch his team from the sideline after tearing up his ACL during Super Bowl LVIII.
His injury was a major loss for a team that needed his talents to stop Patrick Mahomes from winning his third Super Bowl MVP. Now that the curtains have set on the NFL season, the linebacker will now be focusing on recovering and bouncing back as best as he could.
San Francisco 49ers confirm Dre Greenlaw’s ACL injury, wishes for his speedy recovery
During his post-game press conference, Kyle Shanahan confirmed that his star linebacker tore his ACL during the biggest game of the Niners’ 2024 season.
Pro Football Talk’s Charean Williams noted how big of a loss Greenlaw was to the team as they failed to stop the Chiefs from doing whatever they want in the passing game:
“I mean, injuries are part of the game,” Shanahan said. “They’re always a big deal, and it’s always tougher when you lose good guys like that.”
Losing Greenlaw during the game was difficult as he proved to be a great partner to Fred Warner. The 26-year-old had a solid season at Levi’s Stadium, finishing 15 games with 75 solo tackles, five TFLs, four pass deflections, and 1.5 sacks.
Another reason why they’re concerned about his health is his contract situation. He’s entering the final year of his two-year extension with the team, and it’s a huge question mark whether he’ll be able to play for the 2024 season.
Should Dre Greenlaw become unavailable, John Lynch would have the unenviable task of finding a replacement for him in the meantime. They have less than a million dollars on their salary cap, and they would have to do a lot of moving if they want to find a capable replacement for him.
George Kittle, in his signature humorous take, tried to add a bit of humor while also acknowledging how great of a loss Dre Greenlaw was to the team during their Super Bowl loss:
“That’s depressing,” tight end George Kittle said, via Danny Emerman of Bay Area News Group. “To get injured in the Super Bowl? Hopefully he hits up Aaron Rodgers and figures out how to heal up quickly. Besides that, Dre’s the heartbeat of our defense, Fred [Warner] and him. They feed off each other.”
