The Detroit Lions will address the defensive back position this offseason after their pass defense allowed the 6th-most passing yards in the league in 2023.
Their 26-year-old cornerback doesn’t appear to be a part of their plans next season.
The Detroit Lions will not tender their free-agent cornerback.
According to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN, Detroit does not plan on tendering restricted free agent Jerry Jacobs.
Detroit could have offered Jacobs a “right of first refusal” tender, which would have been a 1-year, $2.985 million contract.
Jacobs will be an unrestricted free agent and can sign with any team instead.
Detroit signed Jerry Jacobs as an UDFA in 2021.
Jacobs went undrafted in 2021, and Detroit signed him as an undrafted free agent.
Jacobs appeared in 13 games and started nine in 2021, recording 34 tackles, three for a loss, seven pass deflections, and one forced fumble, and allowed 23 receptions on 39 targets for 288 yards, one touchdown, and a 90.5 passer rating. Jacobs suffered a season-ending ACL tear in Week 14.
Jacobs missed the first five games in 2022 to recover from the ACL tear in the previous season. He appeared in their last 12 games and started eight, recording 42 tackles, four for a loss, one sack, one interception, and eight pass deflections, and allowed 32 receptions on 60 targets for 358 yards, one touchdown, and a 70.0 passer rating.
Jacobs appeared in 15 games and started 12 in 2022, recording 55 tackles, two for a loss, three interceptions, and eight pass deflections, and allowed 52 receptions on 82 targets for 638 yards, six touchdowns, and a 96.5 passer rating. He suffered a lower-body injury in Week 18 and missed the rest of the season.
How did Jacobs react to the news?
Upon hearing the news of not being tendered by Detroit, Jacobs gave a heartfelt tweet thanking Detroit for giving him a chance.
“Forever thankful for Detroit I swear giving a kid from Atlanta Ga a chance at the biggest stage of football I would never forget thank you for letting a kid from Atlanta ga shine I will always cherish that city you help me become my dream..
Forever Grateful, Jerry Jacobs .”
Don’t be surprised if Detroit is aggressive in free agency.
