The Detroit Lions have been huge spenders ahead of the 2024 NFL Draft. They locked up two of their best young players with monstrous contracts in the last few days, but now it has been reported that the team is no where close to an extension with their star quarterback Jared Goff.
Detroit Lions Spend Huge But Not On Jared Goff
Detroit announced this week that they had agreed to massive extensions with both wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown and right tackle Penei Sewell. These are two of their best players and some of the best in the entire NFL at what they do so it makes sense as to why they would lock them up for as long as they can.
These were deals that GM Brad Holmes said the team absolutely needed to get done this offseason. Now they are fully turning their attention to getting an extension done with Goff, but it is being reported that they are no where close to getting a deal done per ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
There is no deal “imminent” for Lions QB Jared Goff, despite the fact that WR Amon-Ra St. Brown and OT Penei Sewell now have landed new deals, per source. The Lions and Goff have spoken about a new deal this off-season, but no deal is close at this time.

Jared Goff Deserves To Get Paid
Brad Holmes has been viewed as one of the best up and coming GMs in the NFL and it is probable that he and the Lions get an extension done with Goff in the near future. However, the fact that they spent so much this past week, may show that they are not willing to give Goff the money he feels he deserves.
Goff is on the last year of his four year $134 million extension and after this year he will be a free agent. It appears both parties do not want to get to that, but neither seems to be close to getting a deal done for the future.
Goff has proven that he deserves big money after leading two different teams to the NFC Championship game, one to a Super Bowl, and he has been a fundamental part in the Lions coming back from football hell after over 20 years.
The Lions do not appear to be in any rush to get the deal done and they feel that they are in a good place with Goff. While the deal should get done before he becomes an official free agent, it is worrisome for fans that their starting quarterback is on the last year of his deal.
Goff was crucial to the Lions amazing season that almost saw them wind up in the Super Bowl. He had a very impressive stat line:
4,575 yards through the air, 30 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions while also completing 67.3% of his passes.
While the deal should get done this year, we will continue to monitor the negotiations going forward while Lions fans hold their breathe. Either way, it will be very exciting to see if this team can get to a Super Bowl.
