Dan Campbell has been largely criticized for his controversial fourth-down decisions during Sunday’s NFC Championship against the San Francisco 49ers. Despite that, however, Jared Goff has remained supportive of his head coach.
Even though Campbell’s decisions ended up costing the Lions a chance at the Super Bowl, Goff highlighted that he actually liked the call contrary to what the critics and media experts say.
Dan Campbell’s Controversial Decisions in Detroit Lions vs. San Francisco 49ers Game
For those who missed it, the Lions had a couple of chances to score via field goal in the second half of the game. However, Campbell decided to go for it in both situations, which didn’t work and ended up being costly when it’s all said and done.
The Lions lost to the 49ers after leading by 17 at halftime, succumbing 34-31. Considering the three-point margin, going for the field goals would have likely changed the outcome of the contest for Detroit.
One of the aforementioned fourth-down situations came in the fourth quarter when the Lions were trailing 27-24. Detroit was at the 30-yard line, but Campbell opted to risk it in hopes of getting the lead instead of tying it up.
In hindsight, Detroit could have played it safe in the said situation because a Super Bowl ticket is on the line. But Campbell isn’t one to change his aggressive style.
As a result, many bashed the veteran head coach and questioned his decision-making. And sure enough, it’s hard to blame those critics.
Jared Goff Reacts To Much-Maligned Call
Jared Goff, for his part, had no issue with what Dan Campbell did. In fact, he did say that he loved it because it shows them how much the coach trusts the offense to deliver in such critical moment.
Besides, it’s part of the Lions’ style and changing their aggressiveness at that point would have sent the wrong message to the team.
In the end, the Lions simply failed to execute.
“Love it. Love it. Keep us out there… (As a player) it shows he believes in us,” Goff said of Campbell’s fourth-down decisions, per Kimberly A. Martin of ESPN.
With Goff backing up his coach, it’s hard for anyone to question what Campbell did. Had it worked out, people would probably be singing praises for the head coach for his boldness. It’s just unfortunate that it didn’t. Regardless, the Lions can only grow from it.
