The Denver Broncos have had a busy week of roster moves as they entered the week $16 million over and needed to get under the cap by the start of the league’s new year.
So far, Denver restructured Mike McGlinchey, adjusted Tim Patrick’s contract, traded Jerry Jeudy to Cleveland, and released Russell Wilson, Justin Simmons, and their blocking tight end.

Denver released Chris Manhertz, freeing up $2.12 million in cap space.
With their recent roster moves, Denver should have $30.5 million in cap space.
Chris Manhertz signed a two-year contract last offseason
Manhertz signed a two-year, $6 million contract with $3.35 million fully guaranteed last March. Denver signed Manhertz because he is one of the best blocking tight ends in the league.
Sean Payton praised Manhertz before the season started
Sean Payton praised Manhertz for being one of the better-blocking TEs before the season started.
“I would say within the last five years, he has been one of the better run-blocking tight ends,” Payton said of Manhertz. “That and then his makeup, his character, and he’s a tremendous guy. You can have a lot of things going for you relative to running the football, but you end up playing jumbo tackles, maybe, if you don’t have a blocking tight end. He just does a lot of those things well. You know exactly what you’re getting from him, which allows you to game-plan easier on Wednesday and Thursday nights.”
Manhertz’s first season in Denver
Manhertz appeared in 16 games and started four in 2023, recording two receptions on four targets for 16 yards in 367 (36%) offensive snaps.
The running game wasn’t effective, ranking 18th in attempts, 18th in yards, 28th in touchdowns, 22nd in yards per carry, and 10th in rushing first downs.
How did Manhertz respond to the news?
Manhertz was disappointed that he got released but understands the business aspect of the NFL.
“I’ve played long enough in this league to where whatever happens, it’s just business. Is it disappointing news? Sure. But it’s just business. You take it for what it is.”
How will the TE room look next season?
Denver’s TE room will look different next season as Adam Trautman and Manhertz are free agents, leaving Greg Dulcich, Lucas Krull, and Nate Adkins as the only three players under contract.
Given the limited experience at the position, don’t be surprised if they sign one in free agency or draft one.
Expect multiple suitors for Manhertz
Manhertz’s role as a blocking tight end is crucial in the passing and running game, making him a desirable option this offseason. He will likely be on a team-friendly deal.
