Colorado Buffaloes head coach Deion Sanders indicated that he would like to keep his son, quarterback Shedeur Sanders, out of cold weather when he makes his way to the NFL.
Quarterbacks taking a stand against teams that want to draft them doesn’t happen often, but Deion seemed adamant about his son avoiding cold weather in a SiriusXM Mad Dog Radio appearance.
Deion Sanders explained that Colorado Buffaloes QB Shedeur Sanders would be better off in warm weather
In an article from Pro Football Talk, Colorado Buffaloes head coach Deion Sanders explained that his son, Shedeur Sanders, would be better off with a warm-weather NFL team.
“Let me tell you something that I have a problem with,” Deion told host Chris Russo. “And this kid can flat out play, I think he’s the best one on the board this year for sure. A kid that’s coming from California for the last couple years, right? And went to Oklahoma. That’s not terribly cold. Chicago’s cold, man.
“You gotta think about that kind of stuff when you’re taking a young man. Like see, when you take a guy from Ohio State and you bring him to Chicago, OK, I could understand that. But from California to Chicago? Not only that, they added what? One or two more games in the NFL. Seventeen games. Come on, man. You gotta factor in that stuff. That stuff matters.
“Like, I don’t want my kid [Shedeur] going nowhere cold next year. He grew up in Texas. He played in Jackson, played in Colorado. Season’s over before it gets cold in Colorado. I’m just thinking way ahead. I don’t want that for him.”
Shedeur Sanders currently plays in what many would consider a cold-weather state, but Deion said the college football season ends early enough for brisk Colorado weather to remain irrelevant.
One successful instance in which a quarterback was able to force their way out of a team that wanted to draft them was Eli Manning. Manning, like Shedeur, has a name with some pull in the NFL world. Archie Manning took the brunt of the criticism when Eli didn’t want to play for the San Diego Chargers in 2004.

Deion already catches as much flak and attention as any other head coach in the college or professional football world, so a bit more for the betterment of his son’s career seems like it would be irrelevant to someone who already undergoes so much scrutiny.
There aren’t many cold-weather teams that will be in search of a quarterback in 2025, so Deion Sanders and his son Shedeur Sanders of the Colorado Buffaloes may be in luck
Under half of the teams in the NFL even fall into the category of “cold-weather” teams. Not counting the Denver Broncos, which is a team that experiences the same weather as the Colorado Buffaloes, the list of cold-weather teams is as follows:
- Cincinnati Bengals
- Chicago Bears
- Green Bay Packers
- Kansas City Chiefs
- Pittsburgh Steelers
- New York Jets
- New York Giants
- Buffalo Bills
- Philadelphia Eagles
- Baltimore Ravens
- Washington Commanders
- Cleveland Browns
Barring unforeseen events, the Bengals, Packers, Chiefs, Bills, Eagles, Ravens and Browns already have what they consider to be franchise quarterbacks who will likely have the starting job locked down in 2025. The Browns are the biggest question mark of those teams, but they have a lot of money tied up in Deshaun Watson which indicates they will be sticking with him for the foreseeable future.
Outside of those teams, the Bears, Giants and Commanders will likely be locking down a franchise quarterback in the 2024 NFL Draft. Unless that quarterback immediately shows they are unable to perform at the NFL level in one year, they probably won’t be going after a quarterback in 2025.
That leaves the Steelers and the Jets. Pittsburgh just signed veteran quarterback Russell Wilson to a one-year deal along with trading former first-round pick Kenny Pickett. The Jets have an aging franchise quarterback in Aaron Rodgers who says he wants to play for three or four more years, but his future is uncertain as he is coming off of an Achilles tear and may want to make a run at the White House.
Altogether, the cold-weather teams that will likely be looking for a quarterback in the 2025 NFL Draft are few and far between, meaning Deion and Shedeur Sanders could be in luck.
