Colt’s Head Coach Shane Steichen recently finished assembling his coaching staff. Horseshoe country hired DeAndre Smith as running backs coach. New York Daily News Journalist Pat Leonard reported the hire. Former running backs coach Scottie Montgomery left and accepted a job with the Detroit Lions.
Smith reunites with Steichen. The two worked together in 2009 at UNLV when Steichen was an offensive graduate assistant.
Smith recently coached star running Saquon Barkley. Barkley rushed for 1,312 yards and scored 10 rushing touchdowns. Barkley also caught 56 passes for 338 yards.
Indy’s rushing offense ranked 23rd in the NFL during the 2022 season. Indy’s rushing offense rushed for 109.8 yards per game. Jonathan Taylor dealt with injuries all season and the offensive line played poorly. Taylor finished the season with 861 rushing yards and 4 rushing touchdowns. Taylor is a talented running back who can continue to improve. Smith should be able to get the most out of Taylor.
Smith has been coaching since 1999. Smith was the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Indiana State. Smith coached at Illinois, New Mexico, Syracuse, Purdue, North Carolina, Utah State, and Texas Tech. Smith’s coaching experience is significant and he can use his experience to help the Colt’s running backs.
