Daniel Jones wants a huge payday
Daniel Jones has one attribute every NFL team wants out of their franchise quarterback. Confidence. And that might be the lone elite talent the New York Giants quarterback has. A new report came out on Monday about what Jones wants in his new contract–and it’s a hefty price tag.
Jones recently changed his agent representation before talking with the Giants to extend his contract. He’s seeking a long-term deal after taking the Giants to the playoffs and winning their Wild Card round game against the Minnows Vikings.

According to Mike Florio with NBC Sports, Jones switched agents to make more money, and it will likely cause the 25-year-old to get the franchise tag:
“So what does Jones want? There are two possibilities. One, he’s willing to do a deal for less than CAA was willing to accept. Two, he wants more than CAA was able to get.
As one source explained it, it’s the latter. Jones wants more than the Giants have offered. Possibly as much as $45 million per year, or more.
The Giants could respond by simply applying the franchise tag to Jones. The non-exclusive level would cost them $32.416 million, and it would allow him to try to sign with another team — if that team is willing to give up a pair of first-round picks to get him.”
Where would that put Jones compared to his peers

$45 million is a couple of million dollars short of what quarterback Jalen Hurts is expected to be extended by the Philadelphia Eagles this offseason. (It’s also $2 million more than what Josh Allen makes.) Hurts finished second in the NFL MVP race and took the Eagles to a Super Bowl. The Eagles destroyed Jones’ Giants 38-7 in the Divisional Round.
Daniel Jones threw 15 touchdown passes to five interceptions in the 2022 season. He added 3,205 yards passing and 708 yards rushing to his career total. Those numbers aren’t elite, but they’re the best single-season numbers of Jones’ career.
Jones would be taking a gamble on the franchise tag. If he regresses next season, he might never again touch $30 million a year. Jones has never made Pro Bowl in four seasons, even in a weak quarterback conference in the NFC.
If the Giants execute the franchise tag on Jones, running back Saquon Barkley, who also wants a big payday, would be expected to hit the free agency market this offseason.
