The Pittsburgh Steelers added Damontae Kazee during the off-season to add depth at the safety position. So far it has been a great move by the Steelers with Kazee’s preseason production. He led the league in interceptions in 2018 and also forced 1 tumble and had 10 pass breakups. Adding another guy to the team who can disrupt at all levels definitely does not hurt.
Kazee Career
Drafted 149th overall in 2017 by the Atlanta Falcons, Kazee had a quiet rookie campaign. His second year jumps off the page as it was a career year for him. He had 82 total tackles, led the NFL with 7 interceptions and a forced fumble. He is known as a do it all kind of guy who played well in pass coverage but is also not afraid to step in to help out stopping the run. The Falcons would go on to release him where he would join the Dallas Cowboys on a 1 year deal. After not getting an extension with the Cowboys he was up for the taking and the Steelers swooped in. One of a few great moves on the Steelers part in an unusually active free agency for them.
Damontae Kazee Preseason Performance
So far Kazee looks to be a great rotational piece to go with Minkah Fitzpatrick and Terrell Edmunds. The team’s goal this year was to get versatile guys. Every coach on the team has emphasized versatility and players being able to play in multiple looks while swapping to different positions on the field. In just 2 preseason games and training camp Kazee has done great so far. He is definitely noticeable on the screen, he’s always wherever the ball is. He has crashed down to help support in the run game and overall looks like a great fit for what the Steelers like to run. With Devin Bush continuing to struggle one thing that could be very interesting is to have Edmunds play closer to the box and play in a hybrid linebacker role and feature Kazee in the back of the defense. This look could help the Steelers big time as Edmunds is a very physical player with sound tackling technique and has improved year after year. He does have his down sides but positioning him in the box more could help hide his deficiencies.
