There have been a handful of retirement announcements over the past couple of days. Dallas Cowboys tackle Tyron Smith is bucking the trend, though.
According to reports, the two-time All-Pro star isn’t quite ready to hang up his boots just yet. The 33-year-old reportedly wants to run it back with the Cowboys, too, for at least one more season.
Tyron Smith Wants to Return to Dallas Cowboys
Smith’s contract with the Cowboys came to an end at the conclusion of the previously completed season. This is why there have been rampant rumors surrounding the eight-time Pro Bowler potentially calling time on what has been a decorated career.
According to Calvin Watkins of The Dallas Morning News, however, Smith believes he still has some gas left in the tank:
“Tyron Smith, the longest-tenured player on the Cowboys, wants to play another season with the team, a person familiar with his thinking told The Dallas Morning News,” Watkins reported.
Despite his willingness to return to Dallas, however, it remains to be seen if the Cowboys actually want him back. Smith remains one of the best players in his position, but injuries have been a major hurdle for him over the past few years.
At this point, the Cowboys will need to determine if they can rely on Smith’s health for 2024-25 or if it’s time to move on after a 13-year union.
Mike McCarthy Speaks on Tyron Smith
For his part, Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy loved what he saw from the veteran last season. Speaking to the media in his end-of-the-year press conference, the 60-year-old expressed how impressed he was with what Smith brought to the table in 2024:
“I think the biggest thing for Tyron is, talking about the path of the season and the training plan that was in place for him, this is clearly his best season that I have experienced with him since 2020,” McCarthy said. “So, he felt good about that. I think the fact that he’s not going into the offseason with offseason surgeries is a plus. We’ll continue to talk as we move forward.”
Despite the high praise from McCarthy, though, there’s still no guarantee that Smith will be around for the start of the new season.
