One of the biggest stories in the NFL this offseason has been the ongoing contract extension negotiations between the Dallas Cowboys and their star quarterback, Dak Prescott. Entering the final year of his contract, Prescott is due to make a hefty raise on his next contract. This year, Prescott is finishing up a four-year $160 million deal that also included a no tag clause, meaning that the Cowboys cannot place the franchise tag on him after this season.
In other words, Dallas needs to find a way to come to an agreement with Prescott before the end of this league year. If they do not, he will immediately become the hottest name on the free agent market with a plethora of NFL teams willing to bid for her services.
How Much Is Dallas Cowboys Quarterback Dak Prescott Expected to Make on His Next Contract?

As previously mentioned, Prescott is finishing up a four-year $160 million contract that pays him $40 million a year. In the years since he signed that deal, the cost for quarterbacks of his talent-level has gone up considerably.
Earlier this offseason, the Detroit Lions gave Jared Goff a four-year contract extension that will pay him $53 million per year. At the time of the signing, Goff was the second-highest paid quarterback in the NFL in terms of annual money.
However, a few weeks later, the Jacksonville Jaguars gave Trevor Lawrence a five-year $275 million deal that matches Joe Burrow’s $55 million annual salary, which is the highest in the league.
While Prescott has not appeared in the Super Bowl like Goff has, he is a far more accomplished quarterback than Lawrence. This has led many to speculate that the Cowboys’ star quarterback could fetch as much as $60 million or more per year on his next deal.
As of yet, Dallas and Prescott have yet to come to an agreement. However, one NFL analyst believes they will for one significant reason.
The Dallas Cowboys Risk Becoming Irrelevant Without Dak Prescott

If Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has proven anything this offseason, it is that he is not going all-in for a Super Bowl in 2024. The team has not brought in any high-profile free agents, nor have they extended their head coach, quarterback, star wide receiver, and stud linebacker, all of whom could be gone after this season.
However, David Helman of Fox Sports does not believe Prescott, at least, is going to be allowed to sniff free agency. Losing their Pro Bowl quarterback would make Dallas become something Jones fears worse than anything: irrelevant.
“Let’s look at this realistically. The Cowboys are a good team in large part because of their three-time Pro Bowl quarterback, who has helped them win 36 regular season games the past three seasons. Because of that, they’re also relevant. They win games, and they generate discussion when they fall short in the playoffs. Knock Prescott all you want for his postseason shortcomings, but he’s good enough to keep the Cowboys in the conversation.
“As much as Jerry Jones wants to win another Super Bowl, he also wants to be relevant — and I think losing a Pro Bowl quarterback is an awfully big risk. The Cowboys aren’t going to stay competitive if they’re going 7-10 (or worse) with Trey Lance as their starter.
“For all those reasons, I think the Cowboys will wind up paying Prescott a ton of money before the season starts. The price tag is scary, but the thought of irrelevance is even scarier.”
As Helman notes, the Cowboys’ backup plan at quarterback is Trey Lance. And if they lose CeeDee Lamb to free agency or a trade, they will not have much of a wide receiver room for Lance to work with. If that were to happen, a 7-10 record would be overachieving.
It is also worth noting that the price for quarterbacks is going to keep going up. Paying Prescott $60 million a year now would be a lot, but in three years someone else is going to be making even more.
