The Pittsburgh Steelers signed one of their former draft picks to the 2024 team before training camp. The Steelers announced they cut safety Jalen Elliott to make the move.

Elliott signed with the Steelers last August but was waived near the end of training camp. He signed to the Steelers practice squad in October and was released in November. He re-signed with the Steelers practice squad on Dec. 19 and would sign a reserve/futures contract with the team on Jan. 17.

Elliott played in no regular-season games with the Steelers. The former Notre Dame standout appeared in eight games and started one game for the Detroit Lions during the 2021 season. He spent time with the New England Patriots and Las Vegas Raiders before signing with the Steelers last season.

With Elliott’s roster spot open, the Steelers signed linebacker Tyler Matakevich. Per a statement by the Steelers, the team announced they signed him to a one-year contract:

Matakevich was selected by the Steelers in the seventh round of the 2016 NFL Draft, spending his first four seasons in Pittsburgh. He spent the last four seasons with the Buffalo Bills.

In eight seasons, Matakevich has appeared in 129 games, starting one. He has 47 career tackles, including 31 solo stops, four passes defensed and one interception.

He has made his impact mainly on special teams in his career, and it’s been a significant impact, with 64 special teams tackles in his career.

The Steelers are fairly loaded at linebacker. Matakevich will have an uphill battle at training camp to make the team, even for special teams.
