Dallas Cowboys Legend Issues Strong Warning to Dak Prescott After Joe Milton Trade; “It’ll Be Ugly”

The Dallas Cowboys are entering a new era of their franchise with first-year head coach Brian Schottenheimer, who was hired after the team decided to part ways with Mike McCarthy after five seasons and just one playoff win. As the new head coach, Schottenheimer is looking to resurrect the Cowboys offense, which struggled mightily in 2024.

Of course, Dallas will have the benefit of having a healthy Dak Prescott next season. The three-time Pro Bowler appeared in just eight games due to a season-ending hamstring injury.

But aside from the injury, Prescott did not look as good last season as he did when he was the runner up for the NFL MVP Award in 2023 when he completed 69.5% of his passes for 4,516 yards, an NFL-leading 36 touchdowns, nine interceptions, and a 105.9 passer rating. In 2024, he completed 64.7% of his passes for 1,978 yards, 11 touchdowns, eight interceptions, and an 86.0 passer rating.

Last week, the Cowboys made an unexpected trade, sending a fifth round pick to the New England Patriots for backup quarterback Joe Milton and a seventh round pick. Last year, as a rookie, Milton appeared in just one game, but was 22-29 for 241 yards and a touchdown.

Indeed, many consider Milton to be a starting-caliber quarterback, and Cowboys legend Michael Irvin recently urged Prescott to not give his new young backup the chance to prove it.

“Don’t give this kid a chance, Dak,” Irvin said on his YouTube channel, as transcribed by Sports Illustrated. “You better stay healthy, stay ready, stay on the football field.

“Now remember, you’re making $60 million a year. This kid (is) making only $1 million. If you give him a chance on the field, it’ll be ugly.”

Prescott just signed a contract extension that will pay him $60 million a year, the most in NFL history. If he is outperformed by his new backup, a sixth round pick last year, it will certainly be ugly for him.
