It sure looks like the beef between former head coach Jimmy Johnson and Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is officially over.
If Johnson’s induction to the Cowboys’ Ring of Honor isn’t enough proof, the Super Bowl-winning coach’s return to the team with a special new role should do the trick.
Jimmy Johnson’s Role With Dallas Cowboys
Johnson spoke about his new but unofficial role with the Cowboys in a recent interview with Joe Rose at WQAM 560 AM in Miami. He highlighted that since his induction to the Ring of Honor, he’s now part of Jones’ advisory board.
Although he has no official title, Johnson emphasized that he’s “back in the fold” with the Cowboys. The two-time Super Bowl winner with Dallas even shared that he and Jones had a long conversation following their Wild Card loss to the Green Bay Packers, as the team owner asked for his thoughts on what to do next.
“We were talking on the phone about an hour after his Green Bay loss, and he was talking about what all he needed to do because he had big decisions on Mike McCarthy and Dan Quinn and Dak Prescott. Everything is hunky dory now. I am back in the fold with the Cowboys,” Johnson said, via the team’s website.
Johnson remains a broadcaster and has contractual commitment with FOX Sports. With that being said, it’s unlikely he’s with the Cowboys in an official capacity. But then again, it doesn’t mean he can’t offer an advice to Jones and the rest of the team.
Jimmy Johnson Reflects on Time With Dallas Cowboys, Jerry Jones
During his interview, Jimmy Johnson also reminisced his partnership with Jerry Jones when they constantly competed for Super Bowls together.
Johnson coached the Dallas Cowboys from 1989 to 1993, during which the team made three straight playoff appearances and won the Super Bowl in back-to-back years in 1992 and 1993.
“The two of us were working around the clock, together. People don’t realize the relationship [we have]. Back then, Jerry and I talked every day. Every single day I’d be in his office. And we never really had a disagreement, and that’s surprising to a lot of people, but we were always on the same page,” Johnson said of his time with Jones.
“And probably some of the tension happened there at the end of my career, as far as with the Cowboys, we were so busy going in different directions that we didn’t talk as much. My feelings for Jerry have never changed. I love the guy. He’s a big part, maybe the biggest part, of my entire career.”
It remains to be seen how Johnson can help the Cowboys, but given his winning pedigree, it certainly won’t hurt to have him advising Jones.
