It looks like Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is pretty happy with the way Mike McCarthy has managed the team so far. After all, they are back in the playoffs and have a legitimate chance at making the Super Bowl and winning it.
McCarthy’s job is always in question, especially since he’s managing the most popular football team in the US, in a state where the sport is like a religion. While the Cowboys haven’t made it to the Super Bowl for over two and half decades now, the expectation is and will always be for the team to win it all.
Ever since McCarthy took over the head coaching role with the Cowboys in 2020, the team has made it to the postseason in three straight years. However, they never made it past the divisional round, losing to the San Francisco 49ers in back-to-back years.
Despite that and the pressure on McCarthy to deliver, Jones has remained satisfied with his regular season results. This 2023 season, McCarthy guided Dallas to a 12-5 record, earning them the top seed in the NFC East.
Speaking on 105.3 The Fan, Jones was asked about McCarthy’s future. The Cowboys owner then proceeded to give his head coach a vote of confidence, sharing that “he’s the big difference this year.”
“I couldn’t be more pleased with what he’s done, and I really mean it,” Jerry Jones explained while calling Mike McCarthy the “busiest cat in all of Texas,” per Michael Gehlken of the Dallas Morning News.
“So, the last thing that I want to do is spend any time talking with him about these kinds of things, on agreements, extension of agreements, especially when I’ve got one. So, that’s it.”
McCarthy has certainly proven himself to be a dependable coach, and his record speaks for itself. It’s only the Super Bowl that’s preventing him from shutting down all the noise about his Dallas future, but once he wins, his job security should no longer be a question.
Can Mike McCarthy, Dallas Cowboys Win Super Bowl
Sure enough, however, things could quickly change in the NFL, particularly with the Dallas Cowboys. If Mike McCarthy fails to lead the team to the Super Bowl in the 2024 playoffs, questions about his job security will only intensify.
The Cowboys face the Green Bay Packers first in the Wild Card round, and they are heavily favored to win that showdown. After all, they will be playing at home where they are an undefeated 8-0 in the regular season.
It is in the next few rounds where things can get tricky, however, especially with the other top teams from the division likely waiting for them. With that said, despite Jones’ endorsement and support, it doesn’t mean McCarthy can relax in the postseason.
