With the 24th pick in the upcoming NFL draft, the Dallas Cowboys will look to select a difference-maker to improve their odds of making the NFC Championship for the first time since 1995. After posting a fantastic 12-5 record and winning the NFC East last season, the Cowboys laid an egg during Super Wild Card Weekend, falling to the Green Bay Packers, 48-32. The NFC East club will need to make massive postseason strides in 2024 to keep the ownership and the fanbase happy. However, they have taken a more passive approach this offseason, especially regarding free agency. Albeit the method, owner Jerry Jones has nothing but glowing things to say about how his organization has approached player acquisitions.
Dallas Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones: Talks Free Agency and Roster Building
On Tuesday, the Dallas Cowboys’ top brass, including head coach Mike McCarthy, owner Jerry Jones, and vice president Stephen Jones, attended the team’s highly anticipated annual pre-draft news conference. Jerry Jones, the elder statesman, took the lead in addressing the media and fielding their questions. The team’s moves, or lack thereof, in free agency, have been a topic of spirited discussion among Cowboys media. However, Jones remains steadfast in his belief that the organization has made significant strides in roster reconstruction this offseason. When pressed about Dallas’ approach, he was quick to commend the club’s consistent course to roster building.
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones: “We’re very proud of this roster. We feel very, very good about the promise of this roster this season. … We feel great about what we’ve been in free agency. We’re all in.”

“We’re very proud of this roster. We feel very, very good about the promise of this roster this season. … We feel great about what we’ve been in free agency. We’re all in,” said Jones during his pre-draft news conference.
Despite Jones’ glowing review, the Cowboys became the last team to sign a player when free agency opened, inking long snapper Trent Sieg to a new deal. The reigning NFC East winners also signed linebacker Eric Kendricks and DB C.J. Goodwin while restructuring the contract of potential future Hall of Fame guard Zack Martin. Dallas famously missed out on the Derrick Henry sweepstakes this offseason but signed journeyman Royce Freeman earlier this month while resigning Rico Dowdle.
Dallas Cowboys: Aiming for NFC Championship Game Next Fall
The Dallas Cowboys remain one of the best regular-season teams in football but have continuously fallen short in the postseason. Dallas has won 12 games in three straight seasons but has posted just one playoff win during that span. However, Cowboys signal caller Dak Prescott continues to post MVP-caliber numbers, throwing for 4,516 yards, 36 touchdowns, and nine interceptions in 2023.
Prescott and company had a solid opportunity to make a run in the last playoffs, but they lost the opener at home against the Green Bay Packers. Green Bay jumped out to a 27-point lead, including a 64-yard pick-six by Prescott late in the second quarter. Dallas scored the final 16 points of the game, but they ultimately could not overcome a four-score deficit.
