After a breakout rookie season that saw the Cowboys’ 2021 first-round pick, Micah Parsons, win defensive rookie of the year. He has his expectations set sky-high for himself and teammate Trevon Diggs for the rest of their careers. In a recent interview with Jori Epstein of USA Today, Parsons said, “It’s hard to put us over (Los Angeles Rams defensive lineman) Aaron Donald, the greatest defensive player in history, with Jalen Ramsey. So I won’t do it yet. But I think we can become them or even better if we learn together and stick together.”
Could Cowboys’ Parsons and Diggs become the best defensive duo ever?
After a 2021 season in which Parsons recorded 13 sacks, 84 total tackles, 20 tackles for loss, and 30 quarterback hits. The first-year pro put the league on notice. Those stats helped Parsons finish second in the defensive player of the year award voting. For Diggs, he did something that is rarely ever seen in the NFL. The 2020 second-round pick intercepted a league-high 11 passes. Both, of these players, were named first-team All-Pro as well.
This duo still has a long way to go to reach the levels of Aaron Donald and Jalen Ramsey. The former is a three-time defensive player of the year and seven-time All-Pro. Donald is even referred to by many as one of the top defensive players of all time. Ramsey on the other hand has made three All-Pro teams and five Pro Bowls. But, the main factor that separated these duos is a Super Bowl championship. With the Rams winning this past Super Bowl, the pressure is now on the Cowboys duo to try and do the same.
It will be very interesting to see how the Cowboys’ duo can handle their success of last season. Now that teams will scheme to try and neutralize them, how will they respond? The Cowboys defensive success relied last season on taking the ball away. That will once again be a key factor in being able to repeat as NFC East champions. This is a huge year for Parsons and Diggs to prove they are indeed one of the top duos in the NFL.
