College Football’s Biggest Storylines: Week 12
Georgia is Undoubtedly the #1 Team in College Football
After allowing a 75 yard TD on the first play of the game, Georgia dominated Tennessee. The best 3rd down conversion team in college football (55.6%) converted time after time after time. Carson Beck had a monster first half, Brock Bowers was Brock Bowers, and the defense shut down Tennessee’s offense on route to a 38-10 victory.
Oregon Might be the Second Best Team
The Ducks look like the next best team after Georgia. They have a loss to Washington on the books, but a likely rematch in the Pac-12 Championship Game could determine who makes the College Football Playoff and who doesn’t. Bo Nix is playing like the future Heisman Trophy winner and the Oregon defense is one of the best in the country.
Heisman Trophy Race is a Two Horse Race
The Heisman Trophy Race is down to Oregon QB Bo Nix and LSU QB Jayden Daniels after the completion of Week 12. Nix, last week’s odds favorite, fell to a close second place behind Jayden Daniels. It was nothing that Nix did to fall, but everything to do with what Daniels did on Saturday. While Nix put up over 400 yards and 6 touchdowns, Daniels put up over 500 total yards and 8 touchdowns.
Some people will favor Nix due to his team’s overall success. Oregon is 10-1 and in a good position to make the College Football Playoff. The LSU Tigers are 8-3 and in third place in the SEC West. Over the last 25 years, only four players (Ricky Williams, Tim Tebow, Robert Griffin III, and Lamar Jackson) have won the Heisman Trophy on a team with three or more losses.
Jayden Daniels (LSU) +110
220 – 303, 72.6%, 3,577 yards, 36 touchdowns, 4 interceptions, 124 carries, 1,014 yards, 10 touchdowns |
Bo Nix (Oregon) +120
282 – 361, 78.1%, 3,539 yards, 35 touchdowns, 2 interceptions, 41 carries, 128 yards, 5 touchdowns |

Jordan Travis Injury
Florida State star QB Jordan Travis had to be carted off the field after a brutal looking leg injury during the first quarter of Florida State’s 58-13 victory over North Alabama. Still in the hunt for a College Football Playoff berth, the injury to Travis is a huge blow for the Seminoles. Florida State will face the Florida Gators next week before their ACC Championship Game matchup with Louisville.
Jim Harbaugh Accepts Suspension
After missing last week’s game at Penn State, Michigan Head Coach Jim Harbaugh decided to accept the three game suspension that was levied to him by the Big Ten. Harbaugh also missed Week 12’s matchup against Maryland and will miss the regular season finale against hated rival Ohio State. Offensive Coordinator Sherrone Moore has been serving as the Wolverine’s interim Head Coach.
College Football Playoff Outlook
Even with a couple of scares mixed in, the College Football Playoff top-8 all won their matchups on Saturday. Michigan had to hold off Maryland, Washington escaped Corvallis with a close victory over Oregon State, and Texas separated late from Iowa State. Florida State lost QB Jordan Travis and Texas is breaking in a new star RB in CJ Baxter. Georgia, Ohio State, Oregon, and Alabama all looked great in their wins over the weekend.
There is still work to be done and adversity to overcome, but we are inching closer to the announcement of the four-team playoff.
