The 2024 college football season has yet to disappoint. With the expansion to the 12-team College Football Playoff field, each week has ranked games with an extra emphasis of importance, especially with two or potentially three losses no longer a postseason entry barrier. Among those teams fighting for playoff consideration is the Arizona State Sun Devils, led by head coach Kenny Dillingham. Thought to be an impossibility in years prior, ASU can make the CFP by winning the remainder of their games. With last Saturday’s high-wire act, a 28-23 win against BYU, ASU is a win on the road against rival Arizona next weekend from a berth in the Big 12 title game.

Picked by many pundits to finish near the bottom of the Big 12, Arizona State has won four straight games and six of their last seven, a stark difference from their 3-9 campaign last season. The Sun Devils made numerous roster changes this offseason, but the main holdover remains superstar running back Cam Skattebo. Top 12 in rushing yards, rushing touchdowns, and rushing yards per game, Skattebo is not only the team’s MVP but one of the best players in the country, undoubtedly and unequivocally deserving of Heisman consideration.

Arizona State Sun Devils RB Cam Skattebo: A True Heisman Candidate

    According to On3 via Twitter:

NEW: Week 14 On3 College Football Heisman Poll.

    Do you agree?

    1. Travis Hunter – Colorado

    2. Ashton Jeanty – Boise State

    3. Cam Ward – Miami

    4. Dillon Gabriel – Oregon

    5. Tyler Warren – Penn State

    6. Kevin Jennings – SMU

    7. Dylan Sampson – Tennessee

    8. Riley Leonard – Notre Dame

    9. Cam Skattebo – Arizona State

    10. Kurtis Rourke – Indiana

Ninth on the Heisman list from prominent college football account On3 is Arizona State Sun Devils rusher Cam Skattebo. The Heisman Trophy Award, given to the player that best exemplifies the “pursuit of excellence with integrity” and displays “great ability combined with diligence, perseverance, and hard work,” is the highest individual achievement presented in college football. Skattebo, in the era of a high-usage transfer portal, stuck with ASU in 2024 despite a three-win season the year prior. The surging Sun Devils, who have gone from conference cellar dweller to college football playoff hopeful, have received a Herculean season from Skattebo. He is in the top 12 in the country regarding most major rushing statistics.

Playing in ten of his team’s 11 games this season, Skattebo has tallied 1,221 rushing yards and 14 touchdowns, averaging 122.1 rushing yards per game. He is also second on the team with 34 receptions and 460 receiving yards. More notably, in their last two games, wins against ranked opponents, Skattebo has collected 276 total yards on a ludicrous 60 touches, emphasizing his importance to the team’s Cinderella-like run.

In a season where the Heisman front runners are a running back and a two-way star, Skattebo deserves a trip to New York for the Heisman Trophy Award ceremony, given his team’s improbable CFP berth. In the real world, Skattebo will not win the Heisman, but with four players likely heading to the ceremony, why not the superstar running back at ASU who has turned them into a College Football Playoff contender overnight?
