Cleveland Browns and Kevin Stefanski allowing the Callahan family to Unite for the Tennessee Titans
Many fans might not have known the Callahan family name until Brian Callahan was named the head coach of the Tennessee Titans on January 24th. A smaller number may know that Brian’s father, Bill, has been one of the best Offensive Line coaches for well over a decade.
“The Titans will also add Callahan’s father, Bill Callahan, to the staff as an offensive line coach and veteran wide receivers coach Tyke Tolbert. Bill Callahan is one of the most well-respected offensive line coaches in the NFL.” According to ESPN.com
Kevin Stefanski, Head Coach of the Cleveland Browns, recently had a press conference stating “Organizationally, we realized that’s a unique situation and we didn’t want to stand in the way of that.”
Cleveland Browns and Kevin Stefanski Permission
Many around the Browns, as well as the Tennessee Titans, have wondered whether or not the Browns were going to allow Bill Callahan out of his contract. The details of Callahan’s contract were not released, but it was stated that “they were allowing him out of his contract” to join the Titans staff. Interestingly enough, the two have not worked together previously.
Bill Callahan Offensive Line Guru
There are typically two reasons to know an Offensive Line coach’s name. That person is either very good or terrible at their job. Bill Callahan has fit into column A – he is very good at his job. “Bill Callahan has a reputation as one of the NFL’s best offensive line coaches. The 67-year-old was previously a head coach in Oakland and Washington.” According to Intelligencer.net
This past season many say was his best work yet. The Browns offensive line at one point had 3 different starters on injured reserve. Before Dawand Jones (4th round draft pick out of Georgia) went down to injury Coach Callahan was noted as a huge part of his development. Dawand went in as the starter after Pro Bowl tackle Jack Conklin went down to a knee injury.
Starting Left Guard Joel Bitonio said “Coach Callahan has been instrumental for us,” Bitonio said. “He’s helped develop a bunch of us on the line. We’re thankful for that. He’s one of the hardest workers I know. He puts in the time with us and he’s a big part of the run game and the scheme and protections.”
What’s ahead for Brian Callahan and Will Levis
Brian Callahan has stated his excitement to work with Will Levis. “I can’t wait to get to work with him,” Callahan said during his introductory news conference. “He’s got a lot of really special physical talents that I’m excited to go see if we can make better.”
Callahan has been noted as being able to help develop talented quarterbacks in the past. “Callahan has worked with four quarterbacks over his 13-year career that includes roles as an offensive assistant, quarterbacks coach, and offensive coordinator, with each having 4,000-yard passing seasons. Veterans such as Peyton Manning, Matthew Stafford, and Derek Carr helped prepare Callahan for the opportunity to join forces with 2020 No. 1 overall pick Joe Burrow and the Cincinnati Bengals after Callahan arrived there in 2019.” (All of this according to ESPN.com)
We shall see if this family duo can help protect the young gunslinger. Will Levis’s rookie year ended early due to injury, but flashes were seen in his limited amount of field time.
