The Cleveland Browns and Grant Delpit won’t be parting ways any time soon. This is after the two sides agreed to a contract extension prior to their Week 14 game against the Jacksonville Jaguars, per Brad Stainbrook of the Orange and Brown Report.
Delpit has been a key part of the Browns’ defense, and Cleveland certainly felt the need to reward him after he has shown that he could be a part of their future.
While details of his extension with the Browns have not been disclosed, it is worth mentioning that Delpit is in the final year of his rookie contract and is due for a solid pay raise. He has a base salary of $1.6 million this 2023 season.
Grant Delpit’s Rise as Key Cog of the Cleveland Browns
Grant Delpit is currently in his fourth year as a member of the Cleveland Browns, though it’s only his third year playing after missing all of his rookie season due to a an Achilles injury.
The 25-year-old safety, who was drafted in the second round of the NFL Draft out of LSU, has since grown year by year. In 2022 when he transitioned as a full-time started, Delpit recorded a career-high four interceptions on top of 10 passes defended, 105 combined tackles and four tackles for loss.
This 2023 campaign, throughout the 12 games he has played, Delpit has already tallied one interception, three pass breakups, one fumble recovery, 0.5 sack, 74 combined tackles, six tackles for loss and three QB hits.
Delpit has been a big part of the Browns’ thriving defense that ranks among the best in the NFL. Cleveland actually allows the ninth fewest points in the league, and they have yet to concede more than 300 passing yards to a single quarterback.
By signing Delpit early to an extension, the Browns are making sure one of their top defensive players remain motivated and happy with the team. Not to mention that it further highlights their faith in him, which could very well be a huge motivating factor in their attempt to make the playoffs even without quarterback Deshaun Watson.
They will have to give Delpit a new contract after the season anyway, so why not do it early and keep their player satisfied and give that long-term security.
