Even after a season that saw the team try multiple quarterbacks, the Cleveland Browns are still finding ways to improve their roster. As it stands, signing Miami Dolphins defensive tackle Christian Wilkins may help the franchise go further in the playoffs next season.
Despite not having a permanent quarterback for most of the season, the Browns managed to finish second in the AFC North division with an 11-6 record. With a tenth-place offense and 13th-ranked defense among 32 teams in the NFL, Cleveland entered the playoffs hoping to make it far.
Unfortunately, the opposite happened during their Wild Card match-up against the Houston Texans. In that particular game, the Browns got destroyed with a score of 45-14 in one of the worst losses in franchise history.
Although the Browns’ offense and defense are in the upper half of the league, they could still use some guys who can help the team improve. In this regard, Cleveland must look at free agency to find players who can make that happen.
The Main Reason Why Christian Wilkins Should Be Signed By The Cleveland Browns In Free Agency
Among the guys Cleveland must take a look at is Dolphins defensive tackle, Christian Wilkins. Aaron Schatz explained more in his article for ESPN:
“Cleveland’s defense was a primary reason the Browns were able to overcome injuries and make the playoffs, but they need help on the defensive line. Defensive tackles Shelby Harris, Jordan Elliott and Maurice Hurst II are all free agents, leaving a space open next to Dalvin Tomlinson.
Wilkins had nine sacks, 35 pressure and 63 combined tackles for the Dolphins last season. He ranked 13th in pass rush win rate among interior linemen while taking on a lot of double-teams, and he’s a very strong run defender,” Schatz wrote.
Signing Wilkins to a projected $80 million contract for next season will definitely be a boon for Cleveland’s defense. As long as the Browns land a talented quarterback, there’s no reason for this team not to improve its record from last season.
It remains to be seen whether Miami or any other team can sign Wilkins first before Cleveland. In any case, there’s just a lot of upside for the Browns to pass up on when it comes to this defensive tackle.
