Clemson has seen a lot of success under head coach Dabo Swinney. This season has been a little rocky. They opened up the season with a loss to Duke and then lost in overtime to rival Florida State. Many fans have been ripping the team for not performing at a high level on the field and Swinney is having none of it.
Clemson Head Coach Dabo Swinney Calls Out Bandwagon Fans
Swinney thinks there are unrealistic expectations of the team from certain fans. “Maybe we need to lose a few games and lighten up the bandwagon. Sometimes the bandwagon can get a little too full,” Swinney said this week. This caused more outcry from fans who blasted the head coach for calling out fans but Swinney clarified saying that it isn’t a majority. “I love our fans. Again, 98.5% of them are amazing. But the other 1.5%, they create a lot of the problems. They’re part of the problem, not part of the solution.” Some of the struggles may be attributed to the lack of adapting to the changing landscape.
No Transfer Portal
Swinney refuses to look at the transfer portal. He took heavy fire after the opening week loss to Duke for his decision. We are in an era of player movement with the transfer portal being a way for players to easily move teams. However, it does make it very hard on football programs and Swinney doesn’t want to participate in the new landscape. While this is a noble cause, it isn’t a great way to win football games. Like it or not, this is the direction that college football is going and in this case, it might be an adapt-or-die situation. It will be interesting to see if Swinney changes his tune in the coming years.
It is never a good look when your head coach is calling out fans. Dabo Swinney has a resume that many dream of. Clemson is coming off a bye and will play Miami on Saturday in a big ACC matchup.
